The healthy transition

Writer: Majid HussainMajid Hussain

This is my third year teaching health and every year it has been different. The programme has progressed again, with the main focus for Grade 6 is the transition between Grade 6 and Grade 7. My first year of teaching MYP was finding my feet and now I'm in my second, I have a better understanding of what students need to get ready for Grade 7 and beyond. I was a little bit worried the content was going to be too difficult, but actually it worked out ok. I had to differentiate the activities for those who found it difficult but generally, most of them got it.

The examples are final pieces of work of the students, but I did provide them a worksheet, which they used every week to record their notes about what they had learnt in the lesson. That was the easy part. The test for me was to see if they could transfer that knowledge into an exercise journal and relate what they had learnt in my PE lessons into something that was done outside of school. My only regret was that I would have liked more time on the exercise journal to reflect on the impact their findings have had, especially with what changes they are going to make their lifestyle and why? Exams got in the way, which brought an abrupt end to my unit and brought the school holidays. I have hope that from what I have seen, some students were able to take it further.
